Hello, I’m Jean-Paul Maitinsky.
Appraising works of art is a privilege. I take great care in honoring your collection, offering personalized guidance, and supporting your needs.
My Background
My grandfather was an old and rare book dealer, not a terribly successful businessman because he kept the best volumes for himself.
At home, I was surrounded by prints and drawings, beautiful books, and collections of candle snuffers and beer steins. My parents were collectors and loved going to antique fairs. When I was a kid they would give me a five dollar bill to buy snacks while they wandered the aisles without me. Instead of buying a hot dog, I used the money to buy 19th century naturalist prints that I still treasure.

As a teenager, my father took me out of school to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art. He declared I would “learn more in a day at the museum with me than you will in school.” The wonder of gazing at antiquities transported me to ancient Egypt and Greece. My father and I delighted in giving each other tours of MoMA, pronouncing Giacometti, and arguing about abstract expressionism and conceptual art.
That led me to a long career in museums, working as an educator, curator, and department director at the Hudson River Museum and Queens Museum of Art before launching JPM Art Services.
